in the southern philippines has doubled to more than 270 people. typhoon bopha is the most southerly typhoon ever recorded in the western pacific and the strongest to hit the philippines this year. 80,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. we will have more from doha after headlines. new clashes have erupted in egypt in the ongoing uproar over a proposed referendum on a new constitution. on tuesday, thousands took to the streets to protest egyptian president mohamed mursi's effort to hold a referendum vote later this month after asserting wide- ranging powers, protecting him from judicial oversight. egyptian forces fired tear gas at protesters, some of whom broke through lines to approach the president. the rally coincided with a one- day strike from newspapers. the united nations is warning food shortages are growing in syria as a result of rising prices and mounting attacks on un vehicles delivering supplies. the u.n. world food program is currently feeding one, 5 million people in syria, the vast majority displaced from their homes. the news comes after the u. n announcing they are c

currency and commodity trading they're going to end early. in japan, indonesia, the philippines, they were all closed in europe. only the uk, french, dutch and spanish stock markets are open and they're going to be closing early. there are now only five trading sessions left in 2012. get your act together. stocks and bonds, solid gains so far this year. the dow has advanced 8% in total. the s&p 500 up almost 14%. the nasdaq has jumped 16%. it's been a good year. the end of the year also means we are just days away from the fiscal cliff, however, and that's the bad news. and looming tax hikes, spending cuts, all of that. both sides warning a very big deal becoming a bit more unlikely. >> and my one bit of advice to speaker boehner is this. you cannot pass a bill with just republicans. on a broad thing like this, you need both. and he has put himself with plan b and sort of an impossible position. he has to get these hard right goes to go along with him. and he and the president were going to say we're going to pass a deal with the majority of republicans and the majority of democrats in the

on the fed. i wouldn't wipe out capital losses because central banks were in the philippines from their central bank had a huge negative equity. the central banks can go on without necessarily having a positive equity. secondly, they have all sorts of tools that they can theoretically use, other than having to unwind their balance sheet. they can increase reserve ratios that they can increase interest rates they pay out excess reserves and so on. so they have a lot of control out there, which makes me less worried about the fed ellen sheets. not that i approved of what they were doing recently. but i think they can get out of there fairly easily. >> i would just add that the president had this massive undertaking, you know, in almost a desperate wickets at the underlying problem. this is a fiscal policy issue and we have an absolute lack of leadership. this fact of the tax policy, much of which has been in place for over a decade is a completely congressionally made thing in congress and the president had refused to work on it until now. so likewise they refuse to substantively ta

fought to honor the veterans who served the commonwealth army of the philippines on the side of the united states during world war ii. because of a law passed in 1946, their service was not recognized. they were denied access to health care, given only half of the disability and death compensation of other u.s. veterans, so senator inouye changed that. over the years he secured nearly $200 million in compensation for filipino veterans, and he fought to grant filipino veterans the same access to u.s. veterans and v.a. hospitals as are other veterans. senator inouye's strong sense of honor and justice drove him to fight for the recognition of these veteran services. he was fond of saying, quote, "justice is just a matter of continuing education." end quote. and for that reason, he also made sure that injustices endured by u.s. citizens and permanent residents of japanese an ssess century during world war ii were never forgotten. he led passage of the civil liberties act of 188, which acknowledged -- 1988, which acknowledged their forced internment and provided compensation for
